Welcome to the Chui SAMS (Systems Approach to Medication Safety) Lab!

The Chui SAMS Lab focuses on improving medication safety by studying and intervening in the real‑world systems where medications are prescribed, dispensed, and used. Our work sits at the intersection of human factors engineering, community‑engaged research, dissemination and implementation science, and health services research.

By integrating these approaches, we identify the underlying system‑level contributors to unsafe medication practices and design interventions that are practical, scalable, and responsive to the needs of patients, clinicians, and communities.

Medication Safety Strategies

*Active Grant* Engineering Resilient Community Pharmacies (ENRICH) Patient Safety Learning Lab (PSLL)

We are moving away from viewing safety as a linear model. Our broadened focus reflects the complexity and inherent variability in modern systems like community pharmacies. Through this analytic lens, we can create more resilient healthcare systems.

Senior Safe for Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medication Safety

Senior Safe (an intervention consisting of a redesign of the community pharmacy OTC aisles) successfully reduced older adult misuse of OTCs without increasing pharmacy staff workload.

CancelRx – A Health IT Functionality

Up to 5% of discontinued medications are still dispensed. 34% of these pose a high risk for adverse drug events. CancelRx created an immediate and sustained increase in the proportion of successful medication discontinuations (Pre: 34%, Post: 93%).
